Are mistakes a good or bad thing?

What is a mistake? People think that it is not a good thing. People try to avoid making mistakes. They do not want to be held accountable for their mistakes. Many of them were punished by their parents and teachers in childhood. That is why people are feeling gulty about their mistakes and are afraid of making them. Many people are trying to avoid them in different ways.

Making mistakes is necessary for learning!

Please take note, making mistakes is a very important part of the learning. If you make a mistake, it does not mean you have done something wrong. Please be aware of this difference. If do you not make mistakes it means you don’t learn at all! We encourage you to try using the Dutch language in your everyday life. It could happen that someone will laugh when you will say something in a not native way. Please do not take it seriously. This is just a part of your learning. We provide a private online environment where you can discuss all language-related problems and challenges with your fellow students. Please share your experiences with them so they can learn from you as you can learn from them.

Here is an example. I know an English lady who has been living in Eindhoven for 25 years. She does understand the Dutch language but she still can not speak Dutch. She is afraid that people will be laughing at her when she will make a mistake. This is a gigantic handbrake on her language development which she can not get rid of.

Learning from the mistakes

Learning from your own mistakes and the mistakes of others is an excellent way to develop a deep understanding and knowledge of Dutch language. When you will find it difficult to give a good answer please ask your teacher in your next lesson. Your teacher will be glad to give a good explanation in the class. We encourage to make mistakes as it is an important part of your own language development. Please do not feel offended when your fellow students will give you feedback. Their feedback is their present for you, not an offense you did something wrong.

Our 2 rules for reviewing and discussing mistakes

  1. Please be always courteous and respectful when you give or receive feedback.
  2. Please see the feedback of other students as their present for you. They are trying to help you learn Dutch, not to offend you!
  3. Please always reply to feedback of others with ‘Thank you’. You may also ask other students some explanation for your mistakes.

How do I post my review? Please see this example.

Your feedback answers should be:

  1. Goed (good)
  2. Fout (mistake)
  3. Niet zeker (I am not sure about this answer)
  4. NVR – niet volgens het recept (not according to the recipe. Used words are not a part of the recipe)
We have a saying in Dutch: “Als je iets echt wil leren, dan moet je een leraar worden” (If you trully want to learn something, you have to become a teacher). The deep meaning of this sense is this: If you truly want to  understand the Dutch language, you need to explain it to others. That is why we want to give you an opportunity to develop your Dutch further by reviewing homework of A1 and A2 students on Dutchbook. This is a great way to repeat the grammar you already know, to gain a deeper understanding of the Dutch language, to learn new words, and to help your fellow students.

Now you are not only our A2-B1 student but also our A2-B1 online tutor!

A2 Tutors
As our A2 Tutor you have an additional assignment: to check the last homework posts in A1 Homework Preparation Group of (at least) two A1 students.

B1 Tutors
As our B1 Tutor you have an additional assignment: to check the last homework posts in A2 Homework Preparation Group of (at least) two A2 students.

Your Dutchbook assignment: Goed of fout?
Please check the most recent posts of two students from A1 or A2 groups. You may check as many students as you like.

How do I post my review? Please see this example.

Your feedback answers could be:

  1. Goed (good)
  2. Fout (mistake)
  3. Niet zeker (I am not sure about this answer)
  4. NVR – niet volgens het recept (not according to the recipe. Used words are not a part of the recipe)

Helping other students is an excellent way to develop a deep understanding and knowledge of Dutch language. When you will find it difficult to give a good answer please ask your teacher in your next lesson. He will be glad to explain.

We rely on all students to help keep our discussion forums a safe place for people to share and view information about the Dutch language.

To do this, we request that all students comply with the following rules when contributing to the discussion forums:

  • Keep it friendly. Welcome new students, share your tips or show them how to use the website. If you are a new student, make sure to introduce yourself – our community is waiting for you.
  • Be courteous and respectful. Appreciate that others may have an opinion different from yours.
  • Stay on topic. When creating a new discussion thread, give a clear topic title and put your post in the appropriate group. When contributing to an existing discussion, try to stay ‘on topic’. If something new comes up within a topic that you would like to discuss, start a new thread.
  • Share your knowledge. Don’t hold back in sharing your knowledge – it’s likely someone will find it useful or interesting. When you give information or links, provide your sources.
  • Keep it safe. Remember that the Homework Answers groups are public places. Don’t post personal information that you would not be comfortable sharing with a stranger. We recommend you use only your first name or a pseudonym in your username and that you don’t post any information that may identify you or anyone else, such as your address, email address or phone number. You can hide your posts in the Homework Answers groups. Please see the next topic “How do I hide my posts for Google and Public?” In this case your posts and your profile will be only visible to the students of Dutch Academy Endhoven.
  • Report abuse. A strong online community is self-governing. If you see abuse, report it to us here or here.

We maintain the right to remove posts

We need to make sure that material posted in the discussion forums is not potentially harmful. For this reason, we may edit or choose not to publish any post, avatar or display name that:

  • contains disrespectful or derogatory remarks about any other member
  • contains advice or content that we believe is damaging, unhelpful or distressing to others
  • contains swearing or offensive language is nonsensical and/or irrelevant
  • promotes personal beliefs in a way that is disrespectful of the choices of others
  • infringes the privacy of individuals or service providers
  • is racist, sexist, homophobic, sexually explicit or suggestive, abusive or otherwise discriminatory or objectionable

If any material you post raises concerns about your safety or the safety of others, we may try to contact you to make sure that you or others are safe.

Should you wish to query a moderation decision, please get in touch with us privately via email and we will respond on the next business day.

You will be advised by email if we are unable to publish your post, or if a post has to be edited or removed from the forums because it breaches our community rules.

We take our duty of care in providing a safe environment for all forum members seriously, and this includes recognising when a member may benefit from participating in our forums and when it may be more appropriate to seek support offline.

We reserve the right to permanently deactivate the accounts of users who breach our community rules.

Who reviews my Dutchbook homework?

  • Students (online only): Homework Preparation group
  • Teacher (in your class only): Homework Answers group

You will find Dutchbook homework on your homework page.

Please take note:

Your teacher will not check your answers in your Homework Preparation Group. If you like to have your answers be checked by your teacher in the next lesson, please post them in your Homework Answers group.

Do you have any questions to your teacher regarding your homework? Please ask them in your next lesson. Your teacher will answer them in your next lesson. Your teacher will not answer your homework related quistions on Dutchbook.

Dutchbook is still in development. If you find any trouble posting on Dutchbook, you can post your homework in our Facebook group.

At the start of your course, your teacher will assign you to a Homework Buddy Team (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta). You have to make your own homework assignments and also check homework assignments of your team members on 2 points:

  1. Spelling and correct usages of Dutch words
  2. The structure of sentences according to recipes

You are jointly responsible for checking their assignments in the Preparation Group of Dutchbook, before they post it in the Answers Group, which will be checked by your teacher. In this way, you as a team help each other improve spelling and grammar.
